For centuries Newfoundlanders have relied on wood burning hearths and stoves to keep warm in the winter, and indeed wood fired cook stoves to put hot meals and fresh bread on the table all year round. In the days before the internal combustion engine’s ready availability, the wood was harvested and transported using horse and sled. This work was mainly done in the winter months, as hauling the timber was much easier over the snow in a sled through forest then it would be in a wagon over the forest floor. Then add the advantage of having lakes and ponds frozen over to cut considerable miles off the trek. Assuming the logger had the good sense to stay off the water when the ice wasn’t safe…
